In 1975, a young child of 12,
from the backblocks of Brisbane, received news that she had won
a part in a TV series police drama in Melbourne. A nervous and excited
kid arrived on the set chaperoned by her mother having learnt all
the lines of all the characters in the script. On the set of Homicide
Sigrid Thornton’s acting career had begun. Since then Sigrid Thornton
has been the star of some of Australia’s most successful film and
Television productions including Seachange,
Whipping Boy,
The Man From Snowy River, 1915,
Prisoner, The Lighthorsemen,
Boy In The Bush and
All The Rivers Run winning awards in Australia and in
the USA.
Although the public perception of film and TV stars is one of triumph
after triumph the reality is very different. Most actors spend most
of their time out of work and have often needed to take other jobs
to survive. In the early part of Sigrid’s career she worked in a
pineapple cannery, a photographic studio and several times as a
waitress in pubs. All actors are at the mercy of the roles they
are offered and many talented actors do not get the "break"
or opportunity to use their skills. Actors have to come to terms
with regular rejection at auditions, very low average yearly earnings
and an insecure and highly competitive industry.
Sigrid is loved and respected by the Australian public not just
because of the sympathetic roles she has played but because the
general public perceives Sigrid as a genuine and generous person
who stands up for what she believes in. Sigrid is well known for
her work with World Vision,
the Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal
Victorian Institute for the Blind, Reach Foundation and other charitable causes. Sigrid has lobbied government to keep
libraries open and to resource the Australian TV and film industry
so it can tell more Australian stories. This work had seen Sigrid
appointed to numerous boards of federal and state film bodies to
help develop the Australian industry.
