One
of Australia's leading and best loved actresses, Sigrid Thornton has
starred in many of the films which are now regarded as classics of the
Australian cinema, including, George Miller's box office hit, The
Man From Snowy River, (Fox Classics),
The Lighthorsemen, (RKO), directed by Simon Wincer, Slate
Wyn And Me, (Hemdale) and The Man
From Snowy River II, (Disney – Touchstone) In addition, she
has starred in several very successful mini-series including The
Boy In The Bush for Channel Four / ABC, co-starring Kenneth
Brannagh and The Far Country co-starring
Michael York and 1915 for BBC /
ABC.
The
Man From Snowy River performed very well at the US box office
and is regularly screened on cable and free to air networks throughout
the world. The mini series, All The Rivers
Run, made for the Seven Network and HBO, set
Australian ratings history and was a hit on US cable station, Home Box
Office and was a top rating series throughout Europe. Sigrid consolidated
her profile in the United States following several seasons in her starring
role as Amelia Lawson in the popular western series
Paradise for Lorimar Television and CBS. David Jacobs, veteran
Producer, of Paradise, Dallas &
Knots Landing, specifically tailored the role for Sigrid,
rewriting the character to make her "Australian". Sigrid was
one of the first Australian actors to have a network series lead on
US Television. Along with recipients, including Clint Eastwood, John
Houston and other western icons, Sigrid was awarded the highly prestigious
Cowboy Hall of Fame award for
best T.V. contribution to Western Heritage for
Stray Bullett, an episode of "Paradise" in which
her character, Amelia Lawson, is accidentally shot.
Since
returning from the US Sigrid did the TV movie The
Feds and earned rave reviews and an AFI best actress nomination
for her episode of GP. Sigrid was
chosen by SHOWTIME to write and present their Cinematheque
segment of film reviews for the Foxtel and Galaxy cable networks.
Gabrielle Lord’s Whipping Boy starred
Sigrid opposite Temuera Morrison from Once
Were Warriors winning the rating slot for Network Ten. The
second series of the ABC / Artist Services production, SeaChange
has been an unprecedented ratings success and award winner
for the national broadcaster becoming the No. 1 show on Australian TV.
Sigrid was closely involved with the development and production of the
first ABC co production, Great Expectations
The Untold Story taking the position as Associate Producer.
Over the last few years Sigrid has entered into development arrangements
with Network 10, Southern Star, Artist Services and independent Producers.
Sigrid
has worked extensively behind the cameras on behalf of the film and
television industry, the arts and various charities. Sigrid was chosen
by the Australian senate to be the master of ceremonies at the International
Parliamentary Union Conference in Canberra. Sigrid acted as one of the
Australian representatives on an official Australian film delegation
to China and also on a cultural exchange delegation to Vietnam. She
served several terms as a member of the board of the Australian Film
Institute as well as serving as the patron for Women in Film and Television.
Sigrid
was appointed to the Commercial Television Production Fund in 1995 for
a three year term. Sigrid has served on the board of Film Victoria and
was the keynote speaker at the "Arts
Angels" program for the Victorian Arts Centre Trust
which raised millions of dollars for the arts. Sigrid continues to do
extensive work with children and World Vision.
At last year's Peoples Choice Awards
Sigrid received the Favourite Actress and Favourite TV star awards with
Seachange receiving the Favourite
Television drama award and the TV Week Logie
for "Most outstanding actress in a series". Sigrid lives in
a converted stable with her husband, son and daughter and her Labradoodle
dog – Billie.
