KERRIE O'BRIEN INTERVIEW FOR SYDNEY MORNING HERALD "SIGRID THORNTON ON THE ART OF REINVENTION" Things have come full circle for Sigrid Thornton. Appearing in Wentworth, a contemporary take on life for women behind bars, takes her back some 35 years to her work on Prisoner. It was her longest stint on a television series and she learnt much from older actors such as Sheila Florance and Maggie Kirkpatrick.
"It's very unusual to see an all-women ensemble, in the same way that it was groundbreaking back in the day under the Prisoner mantle." Wentworth has gained a cult following worldwide. As wonderful as it is, Thornton points out "it's a little bit unfortunate that we're still saying it's ground-breaking. Nevertheless we have it and aren't we lucky to be able to explore such a thing." 25 APRIL 2017
SIGRID URGES PUBLIC TO JOIN THE RALLY TO SAVE MELBOURNE'S QUEEN VIC MARKET FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE QVM FACEBOOK PAGE: "To all Vic Market supporters, I want to encourage you to attend the crucial rally at Queen Victoria Market at 11.30am on Friday. Shopping at the market a couple of times a week for the past 35 years has become a very meaningful part of my life. My market produce is shared at my kitchen table everyday with family and friends. This marvellous public asset appears to have become a bargaining chip in a large property development deal brokered by the MCC and the Victorian State Government. Your fresh food market is in extreme danger. Under the guise of “renewal” is it about to be stolen with diversity diminished, stallholders sidelined and prices set to skyrocket? How did improved facilities, extra parking and open space for the market become a skyscraper property deal? We have been here before and unfortunately, we must fight again to save the people’s market. To Melburnians, Victorians and visitors the market is a diverse melting pot, full of activity, offering high quality goods at competitive prices. Many marketgoers have rejected what appears to be an ongoing council campaign to run down the market facility followed by a cynical plan to “save it”. For property developers, is the market site a once only opportunity in partnership with the City of Melbourne to leverage a publically owned asset into a windfall property transaction benefiting the private sector at taxpayers’ expense? This proposal appears to ignore a process of due diligence underpinned by a transparent business case. Do we accept the spin claiming this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will never return? Are we fast tracking a land grab, without process, that must be accepted because it creates jobs? Is the City of Melbourne’s plan to incrementally change Melbourne’s fresh produce market into a curated outdoor dining and entertainment zone, spelling the end of high quality and low prices for fresh produce shoppers? Will the plan undermine the fabric and value of a key community asset? As a rate payer, I want my council to improve our existing public assets with proper process, transparency and in a financially responsible manner. Is an East West style poison pill arrangement, providing developers substantial compensation should the project not proceed, prudent from a ratepayers perspective? The people of Melbourne and Victoria own the market. Are we seriously going to mortgage it for a plan that is apparently wholly dependent on a property deal? The state government and the MCC both need to put the people first and promote a process that is transparent with public assets – particularly where building developers are concerned. Write, Call and contact state and local representatives and tell them like Peter Finch’s Network anchor, “We’re mad as hell and we aren’t going to take it anymore!” Sigrid Thornton" 23 APRIL 2017

Giving a rare interview, she spoke of the changing winds in Australian film and television and her access to roles previously perceived as masculine in an increasingly diverse cultural landscape. “The wheels for more representation of women across the board are turning slowly, but they are turning in the right direction and that’s very encouraging,” she says. “It opens up the world of film, TV and theatre in all sorts of ways, which is going to be very exciting.” Feature Editorial as seen in The Daily Telegraph / Herald Sun (C) Photography by Cameron Grayson 21 AUGUST 2016
QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET : ACTOR SIGRID THORNTON JOINS CHORUS OPPOSING REDEVELOPMENT Compelled to speak out, defending the organic qualities of the market, Sigrid Thornton is among a growing chorus of shoppers and traders concerned that the revamp will see the market sanitised into something closer to a supermarket.
"The Queen Victoria Market is the jewel, I think, in the crown because it is very original market, in the way that it still operates like it has since its inception," Thornton said. "We don't want to outprice the diverse range of shoppers that shop there at the moment. We don't need refrigeration underground so we can cool store the produce and make it more like supermarket produce." Thornton said the market was in need of subsidised parking, some weather protection for traders and better publicity, but not "another David Jones food hall" - THE MELBOURNE AGE Sigrid has written an Op.Ed on the topic. 7 JUNE 2016

SIGRID TO BE WATCHED IN 87 COUNTRIES ON FOXTEL'S WENTWORTH (SPECIAL APPEARANCE) In news just announced, Sigrid Thornton is currently filming a role in Foxtel Soho's "reimagining of classic Aussie series Prisoner," Wentworth.
Making a special appearance, she will guest star as inmate, cosmetics business owner and socialite Sonia Stevens.. While keeping tight-lipped about her character’s storyline, she admitted she was “confronted with the intensity of the show and it’s also quite violent at times.”
Embracing her return to TV, she said it was vibrant time for women in the industry: “We are following a global trend that does seem to be introducing a lot more strong female characters into the mix with television... It's a bit of a no-brainer for an actress to come into a show like this full of a cast whom I admire so much and who are doing some of the boldest work on television," Sigrid Thornton “Sigrid was always on the top of our casting wish list – adored and admired by audiences for the strong women she has chosen to portray. From the second Sonia Stevens steps from the brawler, there is an unsettling sense all is not as it may seem. I am sure audiences will relish watching Sonia’s long game play out across season four.” Fremantle Media Australia Director of Drama Jo Porter “Wentworth’s fourth season continues the series’ finely-honed evolution as a world class contemporary drama which proudly forges its own path, while fearlessly daring to reimagine characters and elements of the iconic Prisoner series. Having Sigrid Thornton sign on to return behind the walls of Wentworth is a casting dream and a wonderful acknowledgement of the work the writing team has put into the creation of Sonia Stevens and our plans for her and all our characters.” Foxtel Head of Drama Penny Win 29 OCTOBER 2015

SIGRID THORNTON & CHARLES WU STAR IN RAPID FIRE PLAY THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT AT STC In her debut performance with STC, icon of the Australian screen and stage Sigrid Thornton will lead this thrilling, stylish and hyperintelligent hit Broadway comedy that tackles the great question of our time: true or false?
Thornton plays the shrewd, sharp-tongued Emily Penrose, an editor at a prestigious magazine, who assigns what she thinks will be a simple task to Jim, a young intern. Jim, played by Charles Wu (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui), is thrilled to be given the once-in-a lifetime assignment: the chance to fact check a new essay by a writer he idolises, John D’Agata – played by Gareth Davies (Home, I’m Darling). But as Jim methodically begins his work, holding each detail up to the light, he discovers that separating fact from fiction is not such an easy job. Together, these three titanic personalities must negotiate their competing goals, egos, and values to reach some semblance of the truth and get the article to print. For fans of The Newsroom and The West Wing, The Lifespan of a Fact is a timely investigation of the old truism “never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” Directed by STC Associate Director Paige Rattray (Triple X, Death of a Salesman), this high-octane production questions how, in our age of fake news and big data, we’ll ever get to a world that’s post-post-truth. Approx. duration 1hr 15mins (no interval). Subject to change. More info. Content Infrequent strong language, suicide themes. Subject to change. More info. The Lifespan of a Fact is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Australasia). Amazing Grace, Nine's new drama series about life's most surprising and precious moments, features a stellar cast including Kate Jenkinson (Doctor Doctor, Wentworth, Offspring), Sigrid Thornton (Seachange, Wentworth), Catherine Van Davies (Hungry Ghosts), Alexandra Jensen (My Life is Murder) and Kat Hoyos (Here Come the Habibs!)
Amazing Grace is centred on midwife Grace (Jenkinson) and her passionate colleagues at an unconventional Birth Centre attached to a major city hospital. A fierce advocate for her pregnant mothers-to-be, Grace's dubious work/life balance is about to get even more chaotic when a new arrival at the Birth Centre changes her life forever. HIGHEST RATING DEBUT EP OF THE YEAR - NINE REVIVES ABC DRAMA 'SEACHANGE' WITH SIGRID THORNTON AT THE HELM SYD MORN HERALD :
More than 20 years after SeaChange debuted on ABC, the seminal comedy-drama is returning to network television – this time on Channel Nine. The series will pick up the story two decades on, as lawyer Laura Gibson (Sigrid Thornton) returns to Pearl Bay, the town where, for 39 episodes between 1998 and 2000, she searched for her "seachange" from city life. Amongst [Ch 9's] eight new and 24 returning shows, SeaChange was the centrepiece. "I think the notion of SeaChange is more relevant now than it was 20 years ago," David Mott, whose company ITV Australia is making SeaChange, told Fairfax Media. He confirmed the return of stars Sigrid Thornton and John Howard, who played local councillor and shady property developer Bob Jelly. Other original actors will appear in the series, as well as new characters. In a key signing, Mott also confirmed the new season of SeaChange would be written by the show's co-creator Deb Cox. ![]() The reboot was discussed initially with the ABC but Mott says the national broadcaster had responded by saying it "did not feel right for them at the time."
Once they passed on the project, Nine stepped into the frame. The initial series followed city lawyer Gibson and her teenage children Miranda and Rupert as they moved from Melbourne to the picturesque seaside town of Pearl Bay. The new season picks up on the final episode in 2000, where the Pearl Bay townsfolk’s defeated plans to turn their community into a toxic waste dump and Gibson revealed she was pregnant. Laura's daughter Miranda is now in her 30s and she has another daughter aged 18. "There is a beautiful opportunity there to tell the stories of three generations of women," Mott says. - FROM THE AGE/SMH AUGUST 3 2018

ABC BREAKFAST INTERVIEW - THE CODE "A woman in a man's world who's fought her way up the male-dominated ladder."
Sigrid Thornton talks about her character - cyber-security expert Lara Dixon - in the new season of The Code. See the interview on or 30 AUGUST 2016
THORNTON JOINS LAPAGLIA ON ABC'S THE CODE Sigrid Thornton's much anticipated role opposite Anthony LaPaglia in ABC's The Code kickstarts this Thursday September 1.
"Enter Sigrid Thornton as a sassy tech guru working with the government..." "Compelling..." "A wonderful moral ambiguity and political complexity that confounds the easy pigeonholes of hero and villain, right and wrong." "Thornton is terrifically sinister, looming over the shoulder of poor Jesse Banks (Ashley Zukerman) as she manipulates him into serving her dubious agenda; and again the cinematography helps us see her in a whole new light (just as it does with the landscape), turning the fine bones and wide mouth that are generally so appealing into something quietly dangerous. What’s more, that sense of menace is by no means dissipated by the fact that someone who appears to be a genuine good guy, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, is one of her best mates. Indeed, with several of the key guest roles this year – including Anthony LaPaglia as Jan Roth – we’re constantly kept guessing, and Thornton’s Lara Dixon is a compelling blend of charm and cunning." - The Herald Sun The Code is back from Thursday 1 September 2016 on ABC TV 9 JUNE 2016
SIGRID GOES BACK TO PRISON ON SOHO'S WENTWORTH TELEVISION SERIES “(Sonia) is an amalgam from my imagination. The combination of my imagination and the writing. In terms of the backdrop, I really just tried to make her very different from the other characters.”
- Sigrid Thornton From the Wentworth Website: "Ms Thornton is the first actress from the original Prisoner series to join the cast of Wentworth. Rather than reprising her original character Ros Coulson, she enters the prison as Sonia Stevens – a new character partially inspired by one originally played by Tina Bursill. Wentworth’s Sonia Stevens character is the wealthy but self-made dynamo behind a cosmetics empire. She comes into the prison on remand, suspected of the murder of a missing woman. “Having Sigrid Thornton sign on to return behind the walls of Wentworth is a casting dream and a wonderful acknowledgement of the work the writing team has put into the creation of Sonia Stevens and our plans for her and all our characters.” -Foxtel Head of Drama Penny Win. “I thought it was an interesting situation, dramatically, because she’s from a very different socioeconomic grouping to most of the women and she’s not making a special effort, really,” she says. “The way she goes about her business is to further her own ends more than anything else. That’s not to say she doesn’t develop genuine affection towards some of the women but I think there are ways in which she surprises herself.” - Sigrid Thornton Wentworth airs on Tuesdays at 6.30pm on pay-TV channel SoHo. 3 APRIL 2016
PLAUDITS CONTINUE TO ROLL IN FOR SIGRID'S ROLE IN FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - NOW AT THE CAPITOL THEATRE SYDNEY (UPDATE: 7 JUNE 2016: SEASON NOW FINISHED) "Sigrid Thornton proves her versatility across all theatrical mediums shining beside Anthony as Teyve’s wife Golde. Sigrid’s strong-willed portrayal of the communal feeling of societal progression in Anatevka from clinging to one way of life to finding a peace with the choices of her family and being accepting of change was pivotal in the denouement of the production. "
THEATRE REVIEW DOT COM "Warlow is dramatically well-matched by Sigrid Thornton as his wife Golde. Every conflict in Fiddler concerns Tevye, but rather than just observing from the sidelines, Thornton’s Golde is deeply affected by all that goes on in Anatevka." BEN NUEZE DAILY REVIEW "This production is quite arguably flawless. Despite their familiarity on television screens, Sigrid Thornton and Mark Mitchell held their own as Tevye’s long-suffering wife and the town’s wealthy old butcher (with an eye on Tevye’s eldest daughter) respectively. The music is what lingers with you thoughout. Hearing iconic songs, which have been ongoingly reinterpreted in new ways - in their intended setting with a live orchestra and impeccable live singers is mesmerising." ALT MEDIA 6 JANUARY 2016
FIDDLER OPENS IN MELBOURNE - WARLOW & THORNTON'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO STAGE The fiddler is ready to raise the roof in Melbourne. Australia's entertainment elite have rubbed shoulders on the red carpet at the Princess Theatre on Tuesday for the latest revival of the 50-year-old musical, Fiddler on the Roof. An impressive line-up of Australian talent has been assembled for the new production, with stage royalty Anthony Warlow and Sigrid Thornton in the leading roles. And looking at the red carpet, it's clear the pair have some serious pulling power.
- Seven Y. News "Sigrid Thornton is Australian entertainment royalty. As Golde, she is both the supporting wife but knows how far to allow her old-fashioned husband to go before she needs to give him a reality check." - Noise 11 "Warlow rises to this challenge brilliantly and delivers a strong, grounded performance. The supporting cast and ensemble meet this high standard and manage to bring a wonderful array of characters to life, maintaining a mostly uniform and authentic accent throughout. Sigrid Thornton, well known for film, television and theatre, is a confident and strong Golde (Tevye's wife)." - Australian Stage "Warlow’s colleagues hold their own, with each of the principal characters drawn with great attention to detail. Sigrid Thornton’s Golde is a mirror image of her husband - strong-willed, pragmatic, yet thoughtfully sentimental." - Limelight Magazine "Fiddler is remarkably affecting, more domestically than politically, though the refugee angle is especially pertinent today... Warlow's twinkling eyes, gestures and careworn charisma stay in the mind... Sigrid Thornton skilfully avoids cliche as Golde, the tough matriarch. For once, tradition really does rule." - The Australian "The village of Anatevka might be remote to ours, but not so the tension between tradition and radical change, the unruliness of human desire, or the power to endure great suffering: the very things that make Fiddler – staring out at us from the other side of all the horrors of the 20th century – so poignant and immediate." - The Age "Long-term star Sigrid Thornton, at home in all mediums of entertainment, is a canny choice to play opposite Warlow, in that the veteran actress brings mighty skills in standing her ground and establishing a solid character... Thornton finds a characterful, delicate tone for Golde’s vocals." - Man In Chair "Anthony Warlow always brings his own touch of class to a show and finds a new gravelly timbre in his voice as Tevye...He is well matched by Sigrid Thornton as his wife Golde who has a strong stage presence and brings colour to the spirited character. It is not a big singing role but Thornton shows the importance of conveying character through song, particularly in her duet Do You Love Me... A tale of dignity and honour, it holds a timeless poignancy and humanity while bubbling with Yiddish inspired tunes that are as melodic and moving as ever...When Fiddler premiered on Broadway in 1964 it quickly became acclaimed as a masterpiece. It still is." - The Herald Sun Fiddler on the Roof plays in Melbourne until February 27 before moving to Sydney's Capitol Theatre from March 24. TICKETS

SIGRID TO STAR OPPOSITE ANTHONY WARLOW IN MELB & SYDNEY STAGE SHOWS OF 'FIDDLER ON THE ROOF' Fans will be thrilled to learn that Sigrid has been cast as the "sharp-tongued Golde" in Fiddler on the Roof. She will join Anthony Warlow, Lior and Mark Mitchell in the timeless stage musical opening December 29 at Melbourne's Princess Theatre and during a season at The Capitol Theatre in Sydney (opening March 24 2016). Fiddler on the Roof follows the heart-warming journey of a family that has its traditional life turned upside down as the modern world starts to impact on life in their idyllic village. The story's humour, passion and warmth has touched audiences all over the world with it’s celebration of life, love and family.
"I have to say to the only other time I've performed in a musical was really one of the most joyous experiences of my working life... Anthony is without doubt one of the most experienced musical theatre performers in the country, but also one of the most gifted performers in the world." Sigrid Thornton, Herald Sun. - READ THEATRE PEOPLE ARTICLE SEPTEMBER 2015
REVIEWS: "SIGRID THORNTON IS A REVELATION AS GARLAND..." "MESMERISING..." "A MASTER CLASS." "POSITIVIELY KILLS IT" REVIEWS: "Sigrid Thornton pulls out all stops, succeeding wildly as Judy Garland. If Thornton grabs a scenery-rattling role with gusto, Rebecca Gibney takes an understated approach as Allen's stoic and supportive mother. There was a danger that Garland and Minnelli could be reduced to caricatures; instead, both become much more." Debi Enker, The Age "Judy Garland is played with much sturm and drang by Sigrid Thornton" Gordon Farrer, The Age TV Guide "Just as Allen is afforded more than the two standard dimensions of tragedy, so is Judy Garland. After a long break, the 1980s empress of Australian miniseries, Sigrid Thornton has returned to positively kill it with all of the bird-on-barbiturate mannerisms of the late-career diva. Anyone who has seen Thornton on stage will know of her willingness to expose herself to peril in the name of art, but it’s a taller and more intimate order to do the same thing on the telly. This actor works all the lines on her face and all the wrinkles of the self to bring an immense audience a fairly Judy Judy and even if you are not, as I am, an old queen who just loves a fallen chanteuse, you will love Sigrid for making this meticulous effort." Helen Razer: Daily Review "Without beating us over the head with it we see the ground laid for several key developments in Allen's adult life, including the genesis of several of his biggest hits and his instinctive connection with both Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli. Sigrid Thornton as Garland and relative newcomer Sara West as Minnelli are both also excellent in difficult roles, managing to steer away from impersonation while convincing us they are these famous ladies" Melanie Houston, The Age "Thornton is mesmerising as Garland, forever fighting off the rigours of diet, pills and overstrain, taking us over the rainbow into a world of indulgence and victimhood. And West’s Liza is so charismatic and charming, she brings tears to the eye with the fine tremulous suggestion of vulnerability. A round of applause too for Melanie Parry for the impeccable singing voice of Garland. " The Australian "Thornton’s performance as Garland is a master class of the 56-year-old’s ability to surprise; to translate her own fascination for one of the most well-known women in the world into a character both familiar and intriguing." Herald Sun "Taking on her first major TV role since starring in ABC drama series, SeaChange, Thornton delivers a dazzling performance as entertainment icon, Judy Garland.." News.com.au "Sigrid Thornton is a revelation as Garland. On paper, it just couldn’t work, but on screen Thornton is wonderful as the larger-than-life Hollywood child star turned movie icon who struggled to live up to her own legend all the while trying to live down her own demons. When her daughter, the relatively unknown singer Liza, announced her engagement to Allen, Garland was over the moon, or the rainbow." Same Same Online 25 AUGUST 2015
